It seems the MSI RadiX AXE6600 is impossible to beat. I’m interested in a <$150 new or used Wifi 6/6E router or access point with great coverage, latency, and reliability.

You can just use it in a double NAT setup, Markus. It’ll work fine for your case.

Hello Dong

First many thanks for your effort in this great website, it already provided me with many useful informations. But there is one thing I couldn’t get a answer for…

I just bought this router, cause I needed a good Wifi 6 router for VR gaming. First I wanted to use it as my main router, but sadly this isn’t possible, cause my ISP Vodafone Germany doesn’t allow Bridge Mode on the Fritzbox 6591 Cable they provide…
So I decided to use the Asus as dedicated AP for my VR headset (what is also often recommended on many sites). This also worked well, but somehow it feels like a waste of this nice piece of hardware, cause so many tools and functions are not available in AP mode. I know that the gaming features are useless, when using it as dedicated router, cause they rely on QoS, but I am also missing features like the traffic analyzer and other stuff.
So I searched for a other solution, and after some intense Google abuse, I think I discovered a way, how I could use the Asus as dedicated Router while maintaining all the functions. I don’t know how this setup is called (maybe that’s the reason why I can’t get a good answer to my question), basically I have set the Asus to router mode, connected it LAN / LAN to my Fritzbox and disabled DHCP, so the Fritzbox can handle the IP stuff. So now this seems to do what I want, I have something like a dedicated Wifi6 AP for my VR headset, while maintaining all tools and function. Also have my PC connected over Ethernet and internet is working for all devices. So seems like this could be the optimal setup for me…

So what do you think? Is this a good way to go or does this setup have any disadvantages, compared to use the Asus as pure AP?
I couldn’t find a source that could give me a answer to this…
Thanks in advance!!
Markus

I’m considering these 3 routers for a 100m2 apartment with 2 bedrooms and the wall are all concrete and the second bedroom is a bit far from the modem and the wall are all concrete as mention above and I have only a 350mbps internet speed though. I would blindly take your recommendation to purchase new router. Please advice if possible.

The 3 router that I consider are:
1. Asus RT-AX86U
2. Asus RT-Ax92U
3. Linksys MR9610

If there is any other recommendation from you, that would be great.

Thank you.

Here’s how I test Wi-Fi routers, Adam. Get a NAS server if you want fast and true network storage speed.

; – ) I wasn’t expecting transfers 150-200 MB/s, but something arround half of connected speed. So 100-125 MB/s would be fine. Just out of curiosity – did you test wireless transfers with USB device connected or only wired tests which are mentioned in this review?

The reason is your (incorrect) expectations, Adam. Check out this post.

any idea why the difference is so huge?

Copying 5GB .mkv file (both directions).

RT-AX86U USB connected device (ICY BOX M.2 NVMe USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 – 1TB Sabrent Rocket inside, PCIe 4.0) via 2,5 Gb ethernet connection:

– download (from Router’s USB to PC’s NVMe 1TB Gigabyte Aourus PCIe 4.0): 123 MB/s
– upload (from PC’s NVMe 1TB Gigabyte Aourus PCIe 4.0 to Router’s USB): 144 MB/s

The same file, the same NVMe’s via 2,4 Gbs WiFi connection.
Intel AX210 using 22.170.0.3 drivers, WIn11Pro, PC 2 meters away from the router, connection stable (2,4 Gb up/down)

– download (from Router’s USB to PC’s NVMe 1TB Gigabyte Aourus PCIe 4.0): 63 MB/s
– upload (from PC’s NVMe 1TB Gigabyte Aourus PCIe 4.0 to Router’s USB): 46 MB/s

Any hints what coulb be the reason?
