The TB SSDs will be much faster than this one, Shrey. But chances are this one is fast enough for your needs though that depends on your expectations.

I wanted to take your opinion. I am running a m3 max mbp. I took the base model thinking i can edit on Davinci from an external ssd directly. Im planning to keep one ssd for editing and one for long term backup. Considering the read write speeds is the timeline scrubbing and render any different than thunderbolt 3/4 ssds?

I am scared to invest very little budget left.

It uses a new NVMe SSD on the inside (compared to the T7) and is designed to support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. So it’s noticeably faster.

I believe it was done to reduce production costs. Im curious to know if anything changed with the T9 or if its the same as T7with no DRAM.

You’re welcome.
One positive for T9 over T7 is the heat, or less of.
This is important when used as external storage for iPhone 15 Pro Max writing 4K 60 ProRes footage.

That’s generally the case with USB, Paul, and similar to previous USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, like the Crucial X10 Pro. That said, it’s worth noting that many Mac’s Thunderbolt 4 doesn’t support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps), but just USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps).

Thanks for sharing the XP.

Tested on a 2019 Mac Pro and a 2023 MacBook Pro M2max with thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports.
Blackmagic speed test: 900-1050 Write and 900-950 Reads.
This is about 25% faster on average vs. the T7

On the iPhone 15 Pro Max (why I bought T9)
about 850-900 W and 800-850 R
about 33% faster than the T7

So, while faster, the T9 on Mac Os and IOS, not 100% faster on paper vs. T7

Then it’s safe to assume that it doesn’t have the support, Scott. Apple is never shy about propping up its products, so if it doesn’t brag about something, it doesn’t have it.

Everyone involved in USB naming and labeling standards should be tarred and feathered.

If you Google it, lots of discussion out there about this including the newest M2 MacBook Pros supporting it or not (M1 did not) but nothing from a “professional” source I could see that actually tested an M2. Some people speculate they should support it as part of USB4 but offered no proof. One person claimed special active cables were needed. In 2 places I saw people post that they tested it and couldn’t achieve those speeds as the best evidence. So while they could have done it wrong, I would assume not until proven otherwise by a reliable source.

Assuming true, Apple is pathetic that they don’t spell this out. My conclusion is they want to hide the fact because they know it’s lame they don’t support it. If anyone has a credible source testing it, please post and link to it. Thanks.
