The plenum is the conduit that carries air back from rooms to the furnace/air conditioner. That return air temperature is at room temperature. So with a little bit of planning, you can make cables almost invisible.

But be sure to use (or make sure your contractor uses) plenum-rated cable. It is a little more expensive than other cable of the same speed and mechanical specifications.

It is worth using it. In the unlikely circumstance of a fire in your home, you won’t give your insurance company an easy way to deny a claim.
