Soon, you'll be able to travel in style. And by style, I mean super-fast connection. Netgear announced today at CES 2020 its first 5G mobile hotspot, the Nighthawk M5 5G WiFi 6 Mobile Router (model MR5200).
Nighthawk M5: 5G meets Wi-Fi 6
As the name suggests, the Nighthawk M5 is a mobile hotspot that features 5G as the Internet source and uses Wi-Fi 6 to serve clients.
Technically, the mobile router can connect to the Internet at speeds of up to 4Gbps. In reality, the rate depends on where you are and what carrier you use, but chances are it's going to be faster than 4G.
The M5 also has other benefits of 5G, including up to 10x lower latency compared with 4G, and much better spectrum efficiency. The mobile hotspot, by the way, supports 4G, too, as a backup where 5G signal is not available.
Regular router support
As a Wi-Fi mobile hotspot, the M5 can deliver gigabit-class local speeds. But if you feel the tiny device doesn't have enough power of a real router, you're probably right. At the least, it can handle a small number of clients at a time.
To make up for that, the M5 has a Gigabit network port for users to connect it to the WAN port of a traditional router. In this case, it will work as a regular internet source, such as a modem, and let the router take care of hosting the network.
For the power source, the M5 uses a USB-C port for charging and a removable rechargeable battery. Netgear says the mobile router has a long battery life, but can also work when plugged in, with the battery removed.

The Nighthawk M5 5G WiFi 6 Mobile Router is available in the second half of this year with pricing and more details available then.
