Micron had some big news today for fans of portable SSDs. The memory maker announced the all-new Crucial X6 portable SSD and the latest 2 TB version of the existing Crucial X8 drive it leased late last year.
Crucial X6: Slower but tiny and light
Unlike the X8, which was the fastest portable drive at launch and still is one of the fastest on the market, the X6 is a lesser option with the top speed capping at just 540 MB/s.

In return, it's much more compact and light, measuring just 0.43 x 2.71 x 2.52 in (10.92 x 68.83 x 64 mm). And at 1.5 oz (42 grams), you probably won't notice its presence in your pocket. In all, the new portable drive is a competitor of the Silicon Power PC60 in terms of both look and performance.
Despite the tiny physical size, the Crucial X6 shares the rugged features of its older cousin. It's tough, able to handle shocks of up to 1500G, or drops from up to 6.5 feet (2 m).
Like most portable SSDs, the X6 uses a USB-C port and comes with a USB-C cable. It's ready to work with Windows, Mac, and Android right out of the box. Those wanting to use it with a USB-A port, however, will need to get a different cable, or adapter, on their own.
Similar to the X8, the X6 also doesn't have any built-in security features, like hardware encryption, but you can use third-party protection software, such as Windows' BitLocker-to-Go, with it.
Pricing and availability
The new Crucial X6 is available now with a 3-year warranty, in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities that carry the suggested retail price of $154.95 and $284.95, respectively. The 2 TB version of the Crucial X8 is also available now and costs $329.95. Generally, you can expect the street price to be lower.
